Album Review/ Art Pop : Odelet’s ‘Raindance’
Odelet’s music is a whole world of its own. A paradise of vocals that find meaning in their mellow formlessness. The rest of the soundscape is genre-open and stylistically liberated. Her latest release is ‘Raindance’, an album that is as intimate, sensual, and romantic as it sounds. Hued with dreamy colors, gleaming tones and a moody swell, the tracks have a way of transporting you. Or rather, transforming the time, environment, energy and moods around you; driving you towards connection, beauty, and freedom.
‘Know it All’ opens the album. With its vocals flowing like an undisturbed breeze across a landscape of FKJ-esque mellow funk, Lana Del Rey like dream pop, soul, blues, and jazz, it is a dreamland. There are sensual notes that manifest as a deep warmth across dim light, an aura that springs to the mind effortlessly.
The artist dabbles with a lot of abstract imagery and emotions, letting them stay ambivalent. And like that, she introduces different styles, themes, and genres of abstract, all interacting as if they are in an ideological dialogue with each other. These forces act with a mellifluous demeanour, so pleasant and playful, clashing lightheartedly against the free spirit of her vocals. We see this in most tracks, but remarkably so in ‘Raindance’, ‘Bayou’ and ‘Be Still’.
In ‘Dirge’, ‘Jezebel’, and ‘Wake Up Call’ the soundscape is wrung with bluesy grooves. And Odelet’s vocals journey through this live cave, opening portals of ethereal beauty, suspending you in their artistic grandeur and evocative magic. It’s like reaching a connection with mystique and fantasy in an immersive way. A whole world that is charged with an emotional sentience that you can suddenly access and resonate with, become one with. That’s the experience of Odelet’s music. To feel deeply connected to the invisible worlds that exist around us. Listen Now!
